The french sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye was born in 1795 in Paris. Already at the age of 14 years he began an apprenticeship as a metal engraver but could not complete this due to the compulsory recruitment to the army. In 1814 the young artist was given permission to leave the army and started a second apprenticeship as a chiseler. After accomplishing the apprenticeship, Barye worked as a student for Francois Joseph Bosio.
