Modern Art Sculpture - Standing Woman - Gaston Lachaise

The large Modern Art sculpture "Standing Woman" is the most famous work of the American-French artist Gaston Lachaise and was modelled between 1928 and 1930 and cast in 1933. It shows a voluptuous female nude with sinuous limbs. The figure gives the impression of gracefulness and beauty and although her body is very ample, the gestures of her hands seem filigree and girlish. The model for the bronze was Lachaise's wife and muse Isabel Dutaud Nagle who gave her husband motivation and inspiration. The sculptor made eight editions of the figure, examples stand at the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, Milwaukee Art Museum and The Brooklyn Museum. The Modern Art figure is made of 100% bronze and is set on a small bronze plinth with a signature of Gaston Lachaise on it.

The famous sculptor Gaston Lachaise was born in 1882 in Paris and created the "Standing Woman" bronze. He attended a craft shool when he was 13 years old and was interested in decorative arts, until he finally from 1898 to 1904 studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts. He worked as a designer of Art Nouveau objects for the jeweller René Lalique. But he fell in love with the married American woman Isabel Dutaud Nagle and dropped out of university, in order to move to the United States. For the moment he worked in Boston for H. H. Kitson who produced military monuments. But in 1912 he moved to New York and became assistant to Paul Manship, a sculptor. He had his breakthrough in 1913 and became famous with his female nude bronzes that show a very voluptuous body as reminiscence of absolute femininity. After his retrospective exhibition in the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1935 he died suddenly and unexpected.
