Product description

"Seated Woman with Upraised Arms - signed Gaston Lachaise"

Weight 5,1 kg

The attractive Modern Art sculpture "Seated Woman with Upraised Arms" was created by the famous French-American sculptor Gaston Lachaise. It is a female nude bronze that shows a sitting woman on a small post. The scenery seems unnatural, because the woman has strange proportioned limbs and parts of the body. The whole body appears to be pinned together and consists of geometric parts. With the exaggerated female body parts, such as the voluptuous breasts, hips and thighs, Lachaise expressed his adulation for the wonder of femininity. The static figure has its arms raised up and offers slim hands and feet and gives despite her unnatural appearance the impress of filigree feminine beauty. The post on which the female sits is joined with a slim bronze plinth and contains the signature of Lachaise. The whole Modern Art sculpture stands on a marble base and is made of 100% bronze.

As all of the bronze products in our shop, this exhibit is hand-cast in our own foundry and subject to our strict quality inspections throughout the entire process of fabrication. All of our sculptures are exclusively compounded with the help of lost-wax casting.

The unconventional sculpture "Seated Woman with Upraised Arms" was designed by Gaston Lachaise who was born on 19th March in 1882 in France. Already in his childhood he attended a craft school and learned there about decorative arts. During his studies at the École nationale superiéure des beaux-arts de Paris he was taught by well-known sculptors as Gabriel-Jules Thomas and reached first success. But he dropped out of university and went to the United States of America, because he fell in love with his later wife Isabel Dutaud Nagle. She was his muse and inspiration and Lachaise began to model and create ample and voluptuous female nudes, so that he became the precursor of Modern Arts in America. The Museum of Modern Art in New York carried out a retrospective exhibition of his works, but he died very early and unexpected in 1935.
