Abstract Futurism Animal Sculpture - Owl, signed U. Boccioni

“Owl” is a signed abstract animal sculpture that was once created by the Italian artist Umberto Boccioni (* October 19, 1882; † August 17, 1916). The animal figure is designed like a Futurism sculpture but also has some Cubism details. This modern art animal sculpture is showing an owl, whose anatomy was created in a modern and kind of cubistic way as well as with a futuristic touch. Even the level of abstraction is high the identity of the bird is still visible. Boccioni didn’t reduce the shapes of the owl completely but changed the shapes into abstract forms with edges. Due to the forms the exhibit got a very modern touch which gets underlined by the modern and timeless materials the sculptor used – bronze and marble.

As all of the bronze products in our shop, this exhibit is hand-cast in our own foundry and subject to our strict quality inspections throughout the entire process of fabrication. All of our sculptures are exclusively compounded with the help of lost-wax casting.

The Italian sculptor and painter Umberto Boccioni was born in Italy and became a well known presenter of Futurism and furthermore well known for his sculpture “Unique Forms of Continuity in Space” he casted in 1913. Together with Gino Severini and Giacomo Balla he was writing manifestos of Futurism that also get published in Russia in 1914. The owl Boccioni portrayed is a very amazing bird because it looks so different from all the other birds. More than 140 different species do exist. They are all characterized by a quite similar shape and most of them by nocturnally behaviour. Most of the owls only hunt during the darkness, some hunt during the twilight between dawn and dusk and a few owls also hunt during the daylight. The nutrition of owls depends on their breed; some hunt insects and mammals, others small fish.
