Modern Bronze Statue - The Reunion - 1930 - Ernst Barlach

One of the most important sculptures by Ernst Barlach, which belongs to a group, is the object “The Reunion”. In 1930 the artist provided the model for this much discussed motif. The symbolism of this picture is to emphasize. As basic for his interpretation Ernst Barlach use the legend of Thomas and Christ, in which the “unbelieving Thomas” only wants to believe in the resurrection of Jesus, when he can see and touch his wounds. The artist Ernst Barlach was known as a loner. His works were described as “degenerate art” and were removed from the publicity by the Nazis. He was born on January 2 in 1870 in Holstein Wedel. On October 24 in 1938 he died after a heart attack in Rostock. The bronzes and wood objects of him are well-known. He worked as painter, sculptor and also as author. In all these fields he reached prominence. His artistic talent was perceived and supported already in his childhood, when he was very young. After his school years he went for art studies to Hamburg and Dresden.
