Bronze sculpture - The Refugee (1920) - Ernst Barlach

Ernst Barlach's "Refugee" was created in 1920. In this sculpture the existential, pressing escape movement takes three-dimensional shape. The motif of speed is similar to Barlach's "Avenger" (1914) implemented in the massive physicality of the go-ahead refugee figure. The sculptural shape of the escape concept promises hope that speaks from the forward directed face. The formal blocky unity is probably the most striking feature of Barlach’s sculptural art. The replica on the left is marked with the signature of the artist.

The bronze sculptures are made with the help of the lost-wax casting. The objects are done in hand-work. Strict quality instructions are very important for a high quality. Ernst Barlach (1870–1938) was a German sculptor, graphic artist, writer and one of the most important German expressionists. Moreover, he left behind a varied repertoire printed graphic, draughtsmanship and literary style. Over 400 of his works were classified by the National Socialist dictatorship as "degenerate art" and removed from public collections. Some of his works were posthumously I (1955) and Documenta III (1964) presented at the documenta in Kassel.
