Every year, Canaletto’s vista of Dresden’s baroque old town attracts thousands of tourists to the capital of the state of Saxony, which is also called the Venice of the east. In this context, Martin Klein creates an abstraction of this famous image in a two-part series of oil paintings on canvas. The modern realisation of this baroque scenario has a fascinating impact on the observer. The focus is drawn to the central baroque buildings of Dresden’s old town by a selective use of colour accents. The contours of the many buildings become more and more abstract from the centre of the picture outwards towards the edge. Martin Klein emphasises this abstraction by making the depictions of structures and water reflections flow into one another, thereby optimising the effect.
