"Modern Art Bronze - La Danaide (1885), sign. Auguste Rodin"
Weight | 3,6 kg |
The bronze sculpture "La Danaide" was created in 1885 by Auguste Rodin. It is originated in a time when Rodin has elevated the nude of resting women to a cardinal theme of his artistic work. Rodin originally designed the sculpture for his famous work "The Gates of Hell". In Greek mythology Danaide is one of the fifty daughters of the king of Libya, Danaus. In the most common version, she had to kill her husband on their wedding night by order of her father, and is condemned to spend eternity carrying water in a sieve or perforated device. Similar to Sisyphus she comes to represent the futility of a repetitive task that can never be completed. Her curvaceous and sensual attitude cast a spell over the viewer. The figure is signed with A. Rodin.

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is regarded as a modernizer of sculptural art and ranks next to Michelangelo as one of the most popular sculptors of all times. With its multi-faceted surface design Rodin moved the sculptural art in a new direction. The genius of his impressionistic language of forms found many imitators, but it is unique up to today. Flickering lights and mysterious shadows make the characters come to life by the interplay of light and shade.
